Majorca excursions take place all over the island and include various forms of transport, different destinations and different types of food and drink. We think the best transport is riding in Mallorca!
One of our most popular horse riding excursions is our tapas ride which lasts between four and five hours depending on how fast we ride and how longer we spend eating.
The longer part of the ride usually takes place before we stop, with a shorter ride back to base afterwards. It’s quite literally what the English call ‘a moveable feast’ because the bars that we visit on the edge of Sa Pobla serve tapas all day long.
So depending on the time of year, the weather and the temperature, it may be a brunch, a lunch or a dinner stop. It gets very hot here in summer so the smart riders are up early and in the saddle by 8 am when the air is fresh and cool or come to us in the early evening.
In Autumn and Winter, the middle of the day is often sunny and warm whilst the early morning and late afternoon get cold. So that’s the time for a lunchtime tapas ride.
What “tapas” means
As most people know, a tapa is an appetizer or snack in Spanish cuisine and can be a small portion of any kind of Spanish food. They can be either hot or cold and what’s on offer can vary very much from region to region.
They were traditionally eaten as a snack with a drink during the long gap between Spanish lunchtime and dinner which is often eaten very late. These days tapas are eaten anytime and a selection is often served together with bread to make a tasty meal.
In some regions of Spain a tapa was traditionally a complimentary snack served with a drink but this practice only now takes place in rural Andalucia and you can expect to pay everywhere else.
On menus you will often see the different dishes on offer marked with two separate prices – one for tapas and one for ‘raciones’. The raciones are just a bigger serving of the same thing.
You may also be offered ‘pinchos’, which are bite-sized tapas. These originate from the Basque region and are usually served on a piece of bread. They are sometimes called ‘montaditos’
The tapas in Mallorca usually include:
- Patatas Bravas: Fried potatoes with alioli (garlic mayonnaise) and spicy tomato sauce.
- Chipirones: Deep fried, crispy, baby squid.
- Anchoas: anchovy fillets served in vinegar with parsley and garlic.
- Russian Salad: A cold dish made up of potatoes, peas, hard boiled eggs and other vegetables, covered in mayonnaise and sometimes with tuna fish added.
- Croquetas: Chopped ham, fish, chicken or spinach mixed with a béchamel sauce and deep fried in breadcrumbs.
